They certainly think they're Christians.

Society and culture are downstream from the material conditions, and under the current material conditions the wealth and prosperity of society is built on the back of superexploitation, war, theft, slavery, and genocide. The kind of culture produced by empire can't be moral, it doesn't matter their religion or lack of religion. All moral positions are hollow under imperialism.

You aren't going to end imperialism, militarism, materialism etc by just changing the society or the culture. It's the exact opposite. You can only change society and culture by ending imperialism, militarism, materialism, etc etc. This is always the kind of society and culture that would have been produced by advanced capitalism, religion is entirely irrelevant.

God is also decorative in the West. The most religious people in the West are also imperialistic, militaristic, materialistic, hedonistically nihilistic “societies” of amoral, lonely strangers. Clearly the problem isn't cultural, it's something more fundamental.

They've never been witty, they've been playing on easy mode since the end of WWII and now the tutorial level is over.

I heard about that! Heat from data centers is harder, unfortunately, because the amount of waste heat generated by a nuclear reactor is far higher than the amount generated by a data center. With smaller quantities of heat come greater costs to recuperate it, at least until they link all the waste-heat sources up into a single network that can collect from multiple data centers.

China is moving fast, though. I bet we'll see some kind of project like this before the bubble pops in the US.

I feel like dumping "waste" heat is the same as burning off "waste" gas from pumping oil.

It's not really just a waste byproduct, there just isn't a profitable way to utilize it. That heat could be used, but we just dump it into the ocean or the atmosphere because it's cheaper than building municipal heating or recycling it for industrial uses.

If everywhere you go smells like shit, check your shoes.

Talking to you is self harm.

It's complicated. Only a few companies can afford to pay out bribes to avoid lawsuits, which means they'd effectively be destroying all of their competition in exchange. Bluesky and Lemmy can't afford to pay their way out of lawsuits, after all. This would be a handy win for total monopolization of the internet under only a few companies, even if it might also be expensive.

On top of that they were starting down the barrel of FTC for monopoly practices, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some kind of backroom deal with the government here. Maybe if the tech companies allow Section 230 to be repealed and for age-verification laws to pass, the government doesn't force their companies to be broken up in antitrust actions.

I have no idea what is going to happen.

If the news were that it was being amended to make carve outs for businesses who pay an amount of money, then I would be more inclined to agree.

But the news is that it would be repealed entirely.

Functionally, every law has a carve out for businesses who pay an amount of money.

You literally didn't say it was wrong.

And they aren't amending it. They're repealing it. The internet is going to be destroyed, and you're wishcasting about something irrelevant that isn't on the table. I think we should probably focus on how absolutely fucking horrible a repeal would be.

What stops them from using this to destroy the fediverse? Every instance will be liable for every single thing that gets hosted on the server. All they need to do is have a patsy post some illegal content and now the instance can be taken to court.
