the number of downvotes should give you your answer; it's propaganda coupled with natural human misery that makes trying to help others such a difficult (and sometimes self defeating) task.

I interpreted it as people on lemmy want to be petty and hateful and here I come in being like "look at this dork being petty and hateful" and they side with the dork. but im thinking that people should talk about the things they enjoy or think are good into rage bait for people that don't want to do anything think is positive. we should be celebrating small positive actions more than condemning big negative actions online.
I used to know someone who believed it was mentally unhealthy to help other people. She believed people help others because they actually want to help themselves. So, the mentally healthy thing to do is to help yourself and not worry about other people. She said her psychologist told her all this.
I heard that expressed as "there's no altruism, people only help to make themselves feel better". sounds like it would be impossible to get through to them if they saying their psychologist gave them that advice
It sounds a lot like they took something their psychologist said, in context, misremembered the exact wording and intended meaning, selectively reconstructed it, disregarded the original context and then applied it universally to all people in all situations instead of specifically for her in her particular circumstances as part of a sentence deeply embedded in a lot of conversation that took place before and after to try and help her understand why people act certain ways.
That was my impression, too.
Even people who do things wo getting something in return do it for the satisfaction it gives to them, so if you look it that way, there is no real altruism everyone do things to get something at exchange even it being not monetary.
Dang didn't expect someone to say that unirinically, people will do things out of principal to help or conviction to help. They can even hate helping other but simple see it as duty that must be done
Yeah I'm not saying feeling good about helping other is bad. But isn't like real altruism exist anyway. IMHO
I'm saying true altruism does exist, but this is gonna be us claiming what goes on in someone's head anytime they help another person
It seems like you've really got twisted up over somebody making you feel bad. I'd let it go, if I were you. You'll only wind yourself up more.
some dude (or dudette) is living rent free in this guy's mind
Ahhh I'm just having fun trying to document excuses for people to hate on someone helping strangers. I just fascinated with pettiness
Well, whatever floats your boat; but I think it's probably not worth your time dude. I'm sorry that somebody made you feel bad for doing something good, have a good eve โ๏ธ
Uhm im fine. The interaction was hilarious on my end. I'm just sharing in the joy of getting petty hate
My grandmother would only buy homeless people food if they accepted a bible with it.
"thanks for the napkins". that's nice but its also hilarious
