Jerboa is a native-android client for Lemmy, built using the native android framework, Jetpack Compose.

Warning: You can submit issues, but between Lemmy and lemmy-ui, I probably won't have too much time to work on them. Learn jetpack compose like I did if you want to help make this app better.

This is the comment image in question, an otherwise perfectly valid image comment to the thread...

Post: https://suppo.fi/post/9015907

Comment: https://sh.itjust.works/comment/22124696

Edit: Currently on Jerboa 0.0.84

Edit 2: What funny irony it is that the result of the glitch is a floppy disk constantly trying to insert itself ๐Ÿ˜‚

Edit 3: Now the comment chain has gathered more comments, the glitch is still present, but occurs on a different comment now, meaning it can't be the particular image that caused it. Now the glitch is on this comment.. https://lemmy.world/comment/20483461

When I click on the title of a post (I use list view) to see the comments, and then go back to list view, the text style of the title is no longer indicating that I have visited that post. It still shows a change when I upvote or down vote the post. It used to show a change when I followed the actual link (url), but that went away weeks ago. Why all the changes? I'd prefer Jerboa to indicate that I have seen a post if I interact with it in any way. That is, I would expect that clicking the url thumbnail, the title text, or one of the arrow buttons would mark the post as 'seen'.

Now that the problem with inline images being too large when you scroll past them and back is solved, now you can't scroll upward past inline images anymore unless you scroll "fast" enough. The view instantly jumps back down a little bit and keeps bouncing for as long the scroll inertia lets it.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

I've noticed a lot of issues scrolling back up in comment sections lately. I'll scroll down to read some comments, then try to scroll back up and the page continuously jumps back down a comment or two making it completely impossible to scroll up any further.

Anyone else seen this issue?

Here's an example post where I just noticed this: (not sure how to make a link Jerboa will open)

https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/53856150

If I scroll all the way to the bottom, I can't scroll up past the comment thread about whether cows can eat flour. It jumps back down before the OC to that thread is visible again.

I think I may have accidentally pushed some secret combo to set the android system navigation bar and notification bar to auto hide but I can't find that anywhere in the system settings on Jerboa or Android. Anyone run into this before?

I've been stuck in a virtual training this week and normally I know I should stop using an app because it eats all my battery up. Multiple days this week I have been in the app for 2-3 hours and my phone battery is still over 80% when I'm done with a 9 hour shift.

After looking at this aussie zone Post i realise a fun functionality, that could also help new users understand the constellation of instances and how they're connected yet disconnected, could be another option in the level of instance engagement selection.

So we currently have,

  • Subscribed
  • All
  • Local

Would it technically be feasible to introduce to that list a feature like below,

  • Visit Instance

      - midwest.social ^

      - lemmy.ml ^

      - aussie.zone ^

      - feddit.org ^

      - jlai.lu ^

      - lemmy.ca ^

      - mander.xyz ^

....etc

^ denotes a text box expansion button with the about page for each instance.

Its very clear that the melting pot/reddit-esque environment in All is maybe similar to what someone from lemmy.world might see in their Local feed, but for more specialised instances like aussie.zone is completely different.

The Experience from my Local to All

To explain, my local instance (AZ) is full of instance specific posts, Australian specific mostly, and it's own familiar community of users. Most of this smaller scale activity is buried under all the other activity feeding into All, leading mostly to a totally different set of curated aggregated links between Local and All.

This functionality is so great, i can go on All have a look at whats happening in the wider lemmyverse/fediverse, when i get sick of the horrible shit (joke, kinda) happening in the world i switch to Local and see all the horrible shit (joke, kinda) happening in the instance i'm most related to.

The thing is i get curious about other instances. I get glimpses through All of whats happening on their servers, but not a very clear picture. This could be solved through being able to visit these other Local feeds of instances.

Leveraging the Difference of a Decentralised Platform in a fun way.

This would leverage the key point of difference between the fediverse architecture and centralised platforms like reddit.

Each instance to a more or lesser degree have their own communities and culture building up across those specific communities. I imagine Local on instances like lemmy.ml or jlai.lu, etc are quite different than sorting by All. As i say above, aussie.zone is a very different experience to All and it basically doubles the enjoyment of the platform.

Being able to easily explore different instances in their entirety might be analogous to going on a trip, especially with the location based instances.

It could also help with sorting and navigating communities for subject specific instances like mander.xyz, (an instance dedicated to nature and science). This could help with community discovery problems often discussed over on c/fedigrow.

New User's Understanding

At the moment new users, especially going on to sites like lemmy.world, seem to be having an experience largely analogous to that on reddit, maybe with a few more communists in the mix ;).

This is good because its familiar, but as the post at the beginning illustrates, probably doesn't help with understanding the network and its qualitiative difference.

Being able to select and visit feeds from connected Instances to your Local could help bridge that unfamiliarity gap, as new users can select and focus on a single instance and its foibles rather more clearly than the rat-run between different communities hosted on these obscure things called Instances.

This is just Jerboa

I understand that this would just be a change in functionality for Jerboa users, but if it were to be rolled out, tested, and liked on Jerboa, it might lead to wider adoption of the function.

If you read this far, thanks for being patient. I know i'm a wordy writer.

Since the latest update, I've noticed that images aren't displaying properly in two ways:

  1. The thumbnails no longer display within the post body, I now have to click on them to view them
  2. Images in comments are cut off rather than sizing to fit the screen

The screenshot below demonstrates both issues.

Came across this post,

https://lemmy.world/post/34827799

In the jerboa app the video plays automatically, but i can't see a way to pause the video, just a mute button.

I've never seen a video play like this in the Jerboa app, so i'm guess this was that update earlier this week?

Have i missed something? Is there a pause function, or something in settings that stops the autoplay?

Hey I just wanted to ask a question to the devs about the app notifications

I've been struggling to stay active in conversations on lemmy because the jerboa app doesn't support notifications apparently? I thought i was just not paying attention but, after doing some digging, I discovered the jerboa app actually blocks permission to send notifications? That would be fine, I can manage without push notifications. Its the fact it doesn't update while I'm using the app that has frustrated me to the point of making a post about it.

My issue is that even while in the app i dont see my notifications either. I have to physically navigate to my notification tab and refresh it to get updates. Its resulted in multiple occasions where I have several replies and dont see them for literal days because I log in and my notifications say the same number as yesterday.

Im unsure if this is an app issue or my personal settings but id appreciate any help with this as its really making conversing on lemmy nearly impossible. Ive left too many people unanswered for days at a time completely unintentionally.

I know of the "Search" feature at the bottom and the "Local" "All" feature at the top - where local refers to the server you logged into.

However, to discover new communities, I like listing all the communities of a server, select a community to list all the posts and then take a look whether some posts are interesting. I could see using this to find communities I would like to subscribe to.

Am I just blind or is this core feature missing? In the web version this can be done by selecting a server>communities>select a community>go through the posts.

I used to love to use Jerboa for my lemmy needs. However I made the jump earlier in the year over to piefed and I have been enjoying it ever since. I like the extended federation support, the flair, and multi-post comments features all rolled into one.

What does the community think of potential Piefed support?

Anyone else? Is there a fix? On Android.

Most listed posts show a score of 100 or 96. If I select a post the correct number is shown. I don't see this behavior in the web client. I'm on lemmy.zip. Jeroba version 0.0.77-gplay.

I have searched the settings in the app, but didn't found such a setting. I want to have bigger thumbnails for posts with images and link previews. Is that available or if not can this be implemented? I have added a screenshot from "Thunder" with exact such bigger thumbnails. Can this be done?

Links to external sites don't seem to be working. For example, looking at a Not the Onion post, tapping anywhere I'd think should take me to the referenced article just briefly highlights the post (it's clearly detected), but does nothing else. I'm running in an up-to-date Android 15 (Pixel 6) with an up-to-date Jerboa.

Sorry, this is a little embarrassing lol. But my notification bar with the clock and battery don't show in Jerboa any more. Is this some full screen option in the app I've accidentally turned on or something in Android itself I've enabled for this app?

Thanks!

Jerboa sorely lacks the absolute basic feature of searching for keywords in posts. It only supports searching for community names. I can't think of any other Lemmy app that does NOT support general search.

I came to know that there is an issue open in Github for over 3 years now, but no clue as to whether it is been worked on.

Totally respecting the personal times of the volunteer developers who are making Jerboa an awesome app - at the same time the lack of this basic feature stops me from calling Jerboa my favorite.

Anyone else having this issue? When scrolling on the app I can't see the clock or battery or notification icons and can't seem to find a setting to disable this
