don't give me the it's never too late bs. Life happens, people have jobs, debts and rent to pay.

Going back to school when you're employed means debt, earning way less or nothing during your bachelor or master, stress, opportunities you're not aware of because you're simply not at your workplace anymore, unpaid overtime during those 2 to 3 years... the money you lose is more than what the bachelor / accreditation costs.

When does it start being a stupid idea? Is it when you're 30? 40? 50?

For context, I (23M) live in the United States. In Ohio. A bit concerned about privacy because of the whole Nazi problem and the fact that I live in an abusive household.

I've been working on myself a lot recently and realized that I can't do this alone anymore (or rely on Internet strangers to talk about my issues). I feel like I finally have the strength to ask for help in the real world. I've just never done this before. What's it like? Is it warm and fuzzy, or cold and analytical? (Does it feel like someone is providing care and comfort, or is it more like an emotionally detached scientist meticulously studying you and scribbling down notes while mumbling "Hmm, I see, I see" while you yap at them?) Do you start to see results right away, or are things slow at first? How much stuff is recorded in a database that other systems can look up?

I mean like, actually understand beyond just exchanging a few words a day. Like knowing hobbies, favorite foods, political opinions, favorite tv/movie/youtube channels/music/genre of entertainment, etc... overall likes and dislikes... you know what I mean...

As to why I'm asking: I feel like my family is just a bunch of strangers sometimes...

I feel like nobody really understands me.

I would consider my old crush, Karl, to be a Bible Benny, just a bit. He was pretty religious and came from a religious Christian family and had a lot of internalized homophobia. Though he dated a dude and called men and women alike (jokingly) "hubby" or "wifey" and smacked their ass, he was still convinced he was straight or at least "turned straight", as he would say. He was very ashamed to have been dating this dude, acted like he didn't have feelings for him apparently, and acted like it never happened.

Even though I had feelings for him, I don't think it ever would've happened because I was a boy back then and that's how Karl saw me. Plus, his internalized feelings.

Participants were measurably happier and less anxious.

But disappointingly, not by a huge margin:

Perhaps this is due to the fact a significant number of users switched to less harmful online platforms and didn't stop using their phones.

Or perhaps there is actually something more sinister. My real concern with this study is the involvement of Meta.

We actually have evidence that Meta halted internal research about social media:

https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/boards-policy-regulation/meta-buried-causal-evidence-social-media-harm-us-court-filings-allege-2025-11-23/

Would you study tobacco and have tobacco companies involved?

Would you study obesity and have Coca-Cola involved?

I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but could Meta actually bully/bribe Stanford in order to change the figures?

There really should be list somewhere, so all these greedy idiotic companies pushing slop on us can flounder in their losses when the bubble pops.

ESPECIALLY any media-related company that is using AI now to push slop, they can NEVER be trusted again no matter what (ie, spotify)

Id like a list so I can donate/support any anti-AI projects/companies.

Yesterday I changed my ISP to one that allows port forwarding. Today the port forwarding has been enabled by the company and I set it up on the router.

After enabling it, my download and upload speed dropped from peaks of 50 MiB/s and valleys of 4-6 MiB/s to a very stable 2 MiB/s. Nothing else has changed in my qBittorrent configuration. If I close the ports again, the speed goes back to normal. I checked if the ports were open on various websites and all of them show that they are forwarded.

I was looking forward to be able to port forward and connect with every possible peer for years, and today has been a big disappointment in that regard!

Has anyone else seen something like this and if so, can you point me to the right direction to fix the problem?

US imposes restrictions on Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan and Syria, in addition to initial list of 12 countries

Donald Trump signed a proclamation on Tuesday that further restricts and limits the entry of foreign nationals to the United States, the White House said.

The US has imposed full restrictions and entry limitations on nationals from five countries – Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, and Syria – in addition to the initial list of 12 countries. Full restrictions have also been imposed on individuals holding Palestinian Authority-issued travel documents, the White House said.

The move represents an intensification of Trump’s crackdown in the immediate aftermath of the shooting of two national guard members in Washington DC on 26 November. The suspected shooter is an Afghan national who served in a unit under the CIA in Afghanistan and was admitted to the US after its withdrawal from the country in 2021. He was granted asylum this year after being vetted.

First off, I have no interest in being a mathematician. Math was always and continues to be quite difficult for me.

So, as an outsider to advanced math, it blows my mind that there are people who's entire job title is mathematician. How does that work? What does a mathematician do?
