For marmelade / jam / jelly it depends on the sugar contents. I don't know how much it has to be but if it has high enough sugar contents, you can indeed take off the mould generously and eat what is under it. That said - gross! Just don't let foods spoil. Buy what you need and plan ahead a bit.
Because hoping for aliens to do it is abstract enough that it doesn't get someone in trouble for "inciting violence" :p

As someone who disliked celery in the past, I still find it enriches vegetable soups a lot. And by now I actually like the taste of cooked(!) celery. So yes, I would say most people just like it.
