It was circa 1998 that I watched a Playboy tv show where it was listed a series of songs with more or less suggestive or provocative videoclips.

To this day I can still remember three tunes, which were:

  • "Catholic School Girls Rule", by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers (videoclip currently deemed as restricted on YouTube)
  • "Loosey's Rap", by Rick James
  • "Girls, Girls, Girls", by Motley Crue

Another I risk was on the list but can not be sure is:

  • "Addicted to Love", by Robert Palmer

But it was an one hour show, so it was bound to have more tunes on it, even with the very nice host taking a few minutes of screen time.

Any help adding to the list?

We all know the meme, but most of the time it's referenced about someone shitty saying something you already agree with. What I wanna hear about is a time when someone who you broadly disagree with actually gave you some kind of new insight about something - even if you didn't end up coming around to their point of view. Maybe they gave you a piece of a puzzle that you were missing, but then you built on that in a completely different way.

Doesn't have to actually be "the worst person you know," interpret it however you like.

Feel free to call me out for being an asshole for any other reason, too. 😉

Here me out though, inb4 "Why do you want to insult people without being offensive, you inane, paradoxical asshole?"

Well, here's the thing. I do want to be able to offend someone (in some cases), or to say something that might be considered offensive to them, even if not directed at them. More importantly, I want other people to have alternatives to insults, because people are going to use insults anyway, and making those insults less broadly offensive as a form of damage control is a far more achievable goal than doing away with insults entirely. But the purpose is to insult/offend a quality of their character, of that particular person (or a group of people who demonstrate a specific quality, attitude or choice etc), rather than using a random insult which uses a different group than the target individual/group as the butt of the joke and ends up, as a kind of crossfire/side effect, either offending that group or others or contributing to potentially harmful societal attitudes toward them.

I mean, do you have a problem saying "Misogynists are buttfaces"? No? But you just insulted a group. See what I mean? It's ok to insult groups sometimes. But why insult disabled people? They didn't/don't inherently do anything wrong or worthy of ridicule (obviously some disabled people do, like any group of people - but that has nothing to do with their disability). And I'm guessing most people are fine with saying "That person is a real... asshole". Hence the community this is in.

Let's set aside the debate over "Is the R-word (removed, not gRape) offensive to disabled people, or to others who might be offended on their behalf, and/or does it contribute to negative attitudes & potential treatment of those groups of people". Let's just assume for sake of example that it's an offensive or harmful term, or off limits regardless, because many people do take issue with that word and its colloquial understandings and associations/connotations. What would be a viable alternative? I can think of many...

But seriously, and please don't lynch me for saying it in this self-aware meta analytical context, nothing hits as hard as "That's fucking removed" or "What a fucking removed"/"What a bunch of fucking removed". These are powerful expressions, and they have the ability to persuade others to think negatively about a concept, thing, event, person or group of people, or to convey in evocative terms how you feel that something or someone is absurd, ridiculous or foolish. It may also be elements of the sound/enunciation of the word that are effective, even if you just read it and think of it. It's similar actually to the word "fuck/fucking", which I also used there. It means almost nothing extra but it can add emphasis.

And obviously the intention is (usually, or at least often) not to offend or even comment on anything about disabled people, and they aren't even in mind at all. So it is similar to saying "That's gay" (in a negative way), which honestly just sounds lame and cringe to me and doesn't have the same effect as the r word. But the parallel exists where a lot of people aren't thinking of actual gay people at all when they use the insult, and may be pro-🏳️‍🌈/LGBT, but it's still problematic regardless.

Now, I'm not defending using the R word at all, nor do I use it. I actively avoid using it, with the exception of this post. But I see others using it all the time, and I can't help but understand why they do, since it fills a bit of a linguistic box that other words haven't been able to fill as well, although I want to be corrected on that.

Other words which are contenders for replacements when used as an insult in a way that is intended to be used very generally and not directed at or referencing marginalized groups or particular groups at all, aside from "removed/removed" or "gay", include "removed", the N word, and maybe "motherfucker" (I get a lot of pushback from this one, aside from some feminists who agreed it's a little problematic - like "your mom" jokes). Also, using other animals as insults, but I know most people aren't going to agree with me on that one since it's more of a vegan/animal rights thing. Again don't lynch me. Yes, I'm trying to find ways that people can be assholes without being more of assholes than they need to. Does that make me an asshole? Also, do you have any suggestions? Thanks for reading, and "fuck you" (not really, you're alright).

You know that feeling when something gets said so many times that people just start treating it as fact, no matter how shaky it was in the first place?

Like, Santa didn’t make the cut, but God sure did.

What are other examples of things that basically became true through repetition alone?

What is something you can sense that few-if-any people you know can sense? Literal answers only.

For me it's no doubt 'Spotify'. Hilarious loading times and lack of functions, in my case for podcast and audio books, which are standard for years in FOSS-players like AntennaPod.

I keep seeing data showing that a huge share of people around 30 can’t afford their own home anymore, not just in the US, but in parts of the EU as well. It seems like homeownership at that age used to be normal, or at least achievable, but now it feels almost out of reach for an entire generation.

What’s strange is that, for decades, we were told that communism was terrifying because you would supposedly “own nothing,” yet it increasingly feels like the people who can’t afford anything today are those living under capitalism. And at the same time, mainstream messaging keeps telling us we’ll “own nothing and be happy,” as if that outcome is now simply expected.

If people can’t afford a home, how are they supposed to start a family? And without stable conditions for forming households, what does that mean for birth rates, future labor force size, and the long-term sustainability of pensions, healthcare systems, and public infrastructure? Are countries going to end up relying almost entirely on immigration just to maintain population and tax bases?

Curious to know what people think. How do you feel about all this, and what are the long-term consequences if these trends continue?

Thinking about switching from MEGA to SeaFile, but they don't show how many space I have left on the free profile, and I kinda found this suspicious.

Diabetes runs in my family. Almost everyone on my dad's side of the family has/had it and many of them suffered quite a lot under it. My dad was diagnosed when he was 44 (he's 75-now and needs insulin shots multiple times a day) and my brother, who is gonna be 40 next year, was diagnosed earlier this year or last year (not sure if he's insulin dependent or not). I just turned 41 this September and have been riding the "high glucose/pre-diabetic" test results high-wire for the last decade or so. I used to be much more active (pre-COVID) and ate better in the past, but as I get on in my years, I am worried that this is going to become an inevitability even if I were to resume my previous exercise and nutrition regiments.

I think a lot of us can benefit greatly from hindsight and, even if it can't help you now, what were some warnings/indications you were diabetic before you actually confirmed it? If you're up for sharing, what was the final event that forced you to seek help and eventually get diagnosed?

Thank you, in advance, for any information you are willing to share!

Edit: Updated the title to specify Type-2 diabetics. Still, T1 that know how they were feeling prior to are more than welcome to comment, as well!

I'm not sure when or how, but one day when I plugged my monitor back into the graphics port my BIOS screen looked like this.

Everything is fine when I boot into the OS.

I read that updating the BIOS could fix this, but to no avail.

Not sure what info would be relevant here but here are some basics:

  • ROG Strix 760-I Gaming Wifi running Version 1825 BIOS
  • Nvidia 4080
  • Kubuntu
  • Odessey G9 Ultrawide

EDIT - SOLUTION

Turns out the monitor was using display Port Version 1.4; when I switched this to v1.2 everything went back to normal

**EDIT - Thanks! **

I wanted to say thanks to everyone who put eyes on this and offered testing ideas, I'm glad I was able to stumbled to a solution that was prompoted by some of the ideas in here (even though the solution may not seem connected initially to anything stated).

What is the thought in your head that makes your eyes wide open and bloodshot? The thought that constantly echoes in your head, but you cannot shake off.

Hi everyone. I made a post yesterday and it has totally disappeared. It doesn't even show up on my list of posts. Any idea how this can happen?

It was in lemmy.world/politics. And it was about the election in Tennessee next week. The link was http://youtube.com/post/UgkxxibuAxtuEgp6TxJyrsJrNw5358rlzB5b

I had to delete a previous post about the same subject in the same community because the news was a week old and from msn.com

I’m assuming everyone here listens to music somewhat regularly, but I’m curious about how much you care about it. And i specifically want to know about your enjoyment regardless if it's considered a timeless masterpiece or just a meme song. (feel free to share you favorite artists while respecting other's tastes)

Do you care about having decent enough devices to enjoy it or do you just buy the cheapest pair of earbuds to silence the world around you?

Do you have favorite albums or do you just hit play on a random playlist and zone out?

Do you ever listen to music just to enjoy it and nothing else?

Do you talk with passion about your favorite songs/albums/artists?

Do you spend time searching for music?

TL;DR is music art or content to you?

My nihilist take of the day: Maybe sometimes its just for the best to do nothing, you can not fix all of the worlds issues yourself after all. Maybe spend your attention on something less important no one really cares about.

Rate your nihilism at a scale X out of 10. For me it is perhaps a 6

So. I like walking with a staff but I also like having multiple things in one. That got me thinking I would kinda like a light weight umbrella on my staff. Combined with the little end caps that allow it to stand on its own it seems like it could be pretty useful. Even better if it had a metal capped spike at the bottom.

For me, they are people from an online community. We know eachother since 1-2 decades and they know some things about me that even my own mother doesn't know. They even unknowingly saved my life when i was on the nearly suicidal during COVID, simply by responding to my cry for help. Sometimes, we get at each other's nerves, but we still close friends nevertheless.
