I used Reddit for a long time, since the extremely early days of the site, back when most of the content was posted by Reddit staff and there was really just one page.

While I wasn't enthralled with the move from old.reddit.com to the new reddit.com, the site was at least still accessible via the old interface, absent a minor quirk here and there in how Markdown was interpreted, and different ways of customizing subreddit appearance. That wasn't enough to cause me to leave.

What did it for me was that I expected that when they moved from their growth phase to monetization phase that they'd make some changes that I wouldn't like, but I didn't expect them to end access for third-party clients, which was not okay with me.

@pHr34kY@lemmy.world

It could be a backronym, where the meaning of something is changed after the name is selected to fit the name. I mean, the company is Chinese. I doubt that they initially chose an English-based name, but they sure could have adopted it later.

And yes, at least according to Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BYD_Company

"BYD" is the pinyin initials of the company's Chinese name Biyadi. The company was originally known as Yadi Electronics (亚迪电子), named after the Yadi Road in Dapeng New District, where the company was once based.[23] According to Wang Chuanfu, when the company was registered, the character "Bi" (比) was added to the name to prevent duplication, and to provide the company with an alphabetical advantage in trade shows.[24] As the name "BYD" had no particular meaning, BYD started adopting a backronymic slogan "Build Your Dreams" when it participated at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in the US.[25][26][27]

EDIT: Ah, @ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml already pointed this out.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aryan_Nations

Aryan Nations was a North American neo-Nazi[1] and white supremacist[2] hate group that was originally based in Kootenai County, Idaho, about 2+3⁄4 miles (4.4 km) north of the city of Hayden Lake.

Probably some lasting effect from that.

Starting in 1981, Butler organized yearly gatherings of white supremacists at his compound in Idaho which he termed the "Aryan Nations World Congress." At his first conference, Butler called for the division of the United States into racial mini-states, including a white ethnostate in the Pacific Northwest. He said that he had a black ally in the plan, Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam.[3] At the 1983 Aryan Nations World Congress, Louis Beam and other leaders in the white power movement declared war on the U.S. government.[4]

That does make me think, though...I think that we have all the tools necessary to give someone natural hair of whatever color in 2025. It would not be quick or inexpensive, but it sounds like we do have the technology.

First, remove the existing hair:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrology

Electrology is the practice of electrical hair removal to permanently remove human hair from the body. Electrolysis is the actual process of removing hair using electricity.

In electrolysis, a qualified professional called an electrologist slides a hair-thin, solid metal probe into each hair follicle without puncturing the skin (when inserted properly). Electricity is delivered to the follicle through the probe, which causes localized damage to the areas that generate hairs, either through the formation of caustic sodium hydroxide (the galvanic method), overheating (thermolysis), or both (the blend method).

Take skin cells from the patient.

Genetically-edit to obtain hair of given color.

From that, grow new skin that's genetically compatible:

https://news.uq.edu.au/2025-08-uq-scientists-grow-living-skin-world-first

“We took human skin cells and reprogrammed them into stem cells, which can be turned into any type of cell in the body,” Dr Shafiee said.

University of Queensland researchers have been the first in the world to successfully grow fully functioning human skin in a laboratory.

The research team at UQ’s Frazer Institute used stem cells to create a replica of human skin, complete with blood vessels, capillaries, hair follicles, layers of tissue and immune cells.

Then transplant the hair follicles back into the patient.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_transplantation

With Follicular Unit Extraction or FUE harvesting, individual follicular units containing 1 to 4 hairs are removed under local anesthesia; this micro removal typically uses tiny punches of between 0.6mm and 1.0mm in diameter. The surgeon then uses very small micro blades or fine needles to puncture the sites for receiving the grafts, placing them in a predetermined density and pattern, and angling the wounds in a consistent fashion to promote a realistic hair pattern. The technicians generally do the final part of the procedure, inserting the individual grafts in place.

FUE takes place in a single long session or multiple small sessions. The FUE procedure is more time-consuming than strip surgery. An FUE surgery time varies according to the surgeons experience, speed in harvesting and patient characteristics. The procedure can take anywhere from a couple hours to extract 200 grafts for a scar correction to a surgery over two consecutive days for a megasession of 2,500 to 3,000 grafts.

Robotic hair restoration

Robotic hair restoration devices utilize cameras and robotic arms to assist the surgeon with the FUE procedure. In 2009, NeoGraft became the first robotic surgical device FDA approved for hair restoration.[8] The ARTAS System was FDA approved in 2011 for use in harvesting follicular units from brown-haired and black-haired men.[9]

So if you had the time, money, and determination, I imagine that you could probably get natural platinum blonde pubic hair if you were set on it.

In practice, my guess is that it's probably preferable to dye it.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

I thought until now that all platinum blonde hair was a result of dyeing, and in that case, I don't see why you couldn't dye any hair whatever you wanted, but it sounds like there are rare cases where adults do have it naturally:

https://nordicperspective.com/facts/scandinavian-traits-looks

Natural platinum blonde or near-white hair occurs occasionally among the population in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Iceland, primarily among children (as hair tends to darken with age).

Very few adult Scandinavians have natural platinum blonde hair, but plenty has achieved this hair color by means of artificial coloring (as in the rest of the world).

So TIL.

Looking online, I see material mostly saying that there can be variation among all of head, eyebrow and pubic hair, but that generally head hair is the lightest, and eyerows and pubic hair tend to be closer.

I do see some people claiming that their eyebrow and pubic hair color do not match, so assuming that this is accurate, you probably don't have a guarantee.

https://community.whattoexpect.com/forums/hot-topics-1/topic/color-eyebrows-vs-pubic-hair-69859731.html

True or false? I don't think it's true, but my husband claims the color of your eyebrows is more or less the same as the color of your pubic hair (yes, this is the kind of subject that comes up out of the blue during breakfast, sigh). In my case it seems to be correct (blonde hair, black eyebrows, black pubic hair) but I guess this is a coincidence?

False. Super white eyebrows and lashes. Dishwater blonde hair. Dishwater to Light brown pubic hair. My ex used to joke about it to his friends.

This is a shot from the interior of a car (there are several "Metrolinks"; this is in St. Louis)

I tried searching around, but couldn't find images that looked much different for the St. Louis Metrolink.

Lambert Airport

Based on this map, it's the Red Line.

https://www.metrostlouis.org/nextstop/contract-for-new-metrolink-light-rail-vehicles-approved/

Siemens Mobility has been a leader in intelligent transport solutions for more than 175 years and has been the exclusive provider of light rail vehicles since MetroLink began operations 30 years ago.

https://www.mobility.siemens.com/us/en/company/newsroom/press-releases/siemens-mobility-to-deliver-metro-transit-in-st-louis-with-55-s200-high-floor-light-rail-vehicles.html

Bi-State Development, which operates Metro Transit in St. Louis, has selected Siemens Mobility to design and manufacture up to 55 new hybrid battery Siemens S200 high-floor vehicles to replace its oldest light rail vehicles. For its MetroLink light rail system, Metro Transit currently operates 87 Siemens SD-400 and SD-460 light rail vehicles (LRVs) first ordered in 1990. With the oldest vehicles at the end of their lifecycle, these new S200 vehicles will offer the latest in comfort, reliability and sustainability.

So I'm guessing that it's either an SD-400 or SD-460, and presumably there is some variation.

looks puzzled

I don't think that it mostly stops more-energetic stuff.

Hmm.

Are you thinking of the magnetosphere rather than the atmosphere? I didn't mention that, but I guess that'd also be a factor.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 0 points 10 months ago (2 children)

That's a good starting point, but caveats:

  • My bet is that most of our thermal circulation is via the movement of our blood. That's probably not directly analogous to spacecraft.

  • If one isn't just talking thermal, we do burn at 1AU. Go lie in the sun without cover long enough -- especially if you're pale-skinned -- long enough, and you'll get burned. Without the atmosphere, we'd be hit by more UV light, too.

IT IS FOR WATER CONSERVATION: The larger lever is to flush out around 6 to 9 liters of water, whereas the smaller lever is to flush out around 3 to 4.5 liters of water. Clearly, the larger one is to flush solid waste and the smaller one is to flush liquid waste.

Given the information disparity between me and insurers, probably take out a life insurance policy.
