warez and IRC is where I started. There used to be IRC channels you could go to and get links to warez sites for stuff or simply share directly via IRC downloading. The people who were in college/university with T1 lines were the kings of that stuff at the time as everyone else was lucky if they were even on a 56k dial-up connection. I pretty much pirated almost every Dreamcast game via IRC OR via forums where people would burn stuff to a disc for you and then physically mail the discs to your house. I had a buddy that was in college half way across the country that would do this. download a bunch of stuff via his T1 line, burn the stuff to a bunch of CD-Rs and then mail them to my house, I remember that's how I got Windows 2000.

I could see them detaining you simply for having linux on your laptop. If they can't navigate around it then you're obviously up to no good. I don't use a display manager and could see them cuffing me simply because you need to login to my machine via TTY and know which WM i'm using.
because not everyone in the country is under 16. So if you're in your 40s and suddenly decide you want to start using tiktok or facebook then you have to provide proof that you're not a teenager. which means providing ID or selfies or both to whomever they use to verify your identity. Now with that info they can now build a profile about what you do online. Also the issue that what happens if this info you've provided is in a data breach. OR they simply sell it to data collection companies.
they start making php forums and using IRC, hey i'm all for that.
the verification process. you could be 42 and never signed up for social media and now you decide you want to post comments on tiktok. Welp now you gotta verify that you're not a teenager. So provide your ID, provide a photo of yourself holding your ID, and hope some company that is obtaining that information either doesn't sell it or doesn't have a security breach. and a bonus to all that is the potential to further track all activities you do online. they can now easily build a profile of you via the social networks you sign up for.
that's the problem.
Went from dating the lead singer of an emo/rap band that was a Fall Out Boy side project to former Prime Minister of Canada.
Hey I kinda liked Gym Class Heroes.
yup this is what companies are going to pivot to and I'm already seeing it. I've recently had potential new clients reach out to me not to code review their vibe coders AI slop but rather something similar to "verification debt" i.e. they want to stay the course with LLMs and vibe coders BUT have someone else on board to verify everything.
I've told each and every one of them no, I won't do that. Why bring someone else on board or even a team of people to verify the slop when you can can just circumvent the slop, fire the vibe coder and cancel your LLM sub, and just have the people verifying actually write the shit instead.
These places simply refuse to ditch AI. they're too deep into it now. they'll continue to utilize AI and Junior Devs to build their crap from end to end and then hope that someone can come in and make sure whats been produced actually works and scales. It won't, it never will, so build times will take longer and end up costing them as much if not more than when they had a team of devs.
They all drank the linkedin tech bros kool-aid and refuse to admit they were actually drinking tech bro piss.
this is a dumbest opinion out of all the dumb fediverse opinions i've read.
I go to pixelfed to post my art and view other peoples art. that's it. I don't go there to read posts or what's going on in peoples lives. For that I have Akkoma/Mastodon. If I want further interaction and discussion I have Piefed/Lemmy.
this blog post just reeks of "I need my voice to be heard on all the various platforms at the same time and I don't want to go to each individual platform to do it" well I'm sorry cupcake that's now how things work. Why isn't this person complaining about Piefeed posts not showing up on Mastodon or vice versa?
If I sign up to Instagram I don't expect to see facebook posts. Most people understand this concept. People aren't going to go to Pixelfeed and then assume they instantly have access to view Mastodon and Lemmy at the same time.
meh I'm Canadian and after reading this fuck Israel, fuck all Israelis, all of them. I don't care anymore. Call me an anti-semite whatever I don't care. Fuck that country, fuck it's people. There's zero redeeming factors for ANY of them.
It's really good, I've been using it for well over a year now. has everything. The dev also had one for youtube but I don't think he's developing it anymore due to the constant changes.
I'm Canadian and pretty much every American I've met that came up here has been nice. Loud, but nice. but seriously, you guys are really loud.
if you like vim navigation there's Qutebrowser. I use that as my daily driver and I love it. will never use another browser again.
