I wouldn't call it "big tech". The biggest problem is that none of the chats are encrypted by default. And even if you do use "secret chats", the encryption there doesn't seem to be up to PAR with modern standards.

The creator previously refused to comply with warrants but since he was jailed in France, that's pretty much over.

A good messenger is unable to comply, by design, because it simply does not store the data that these govts are after.

Yes I did read that the first time, but it doesn't explain anything.

Sounds like you're trading money for privacy. Why isn't it available on the $25 tier?

How convenient...

It says this was created by the founder of the Calyx foundation, who is a reputable guy. So unless they're just lying, I think it's legit. Still might give it a few days or weeks to see what shakes out. Probably just paid marketing.

phreeli.com

Phreeli users can also pay their bills with tough-to-trace cryptocurrency like Zcash or Monero.

Lies. I did this so you don't have to.

"forces" how? This shit drives me absolutely nuts, I can never find my apps.

Some people view the Fediverse as any federated protocol.

Much like ActivityPub, it's just a protocol, and it is whatever you make it.

You can but it is very clunky. Bonfire looks like they may have or will fix this in the future.

The Fediverse has plenty of problems but...this ain't it.

A bigger problem would be the inevitable outcome of what happened with Instagram; people just post pictures of text to get more reach (and probably also to circumvent Mastodon's stupid character limits).

It's a stupid and arbitrary limitation, but I digress.
