Oh it just occurred to me why you're saying the thing about buying something. Even when I shop like a regular customer, I still decline to show my receipt, both as personal practice and to help destigmatizate it for anyone who is actually stealing

Yeah we're talking about different kinds of shoplifting 😅 I suppose I should've posted this to c/illegalism, but I wanted to support this instance

In the States, at Walmart, someone's entire job is to stand at the door and ask to see receipts.
