I had assumed the "Tragedy of the Commons" dated to medieval times, possibly as a school teacher had introduced the idea (and to a child teachers are older than dirt).

Garrett Hardin’s essay “The Tragedy of the Commons,” published in Science magazine in 1968.

Net-Net it appears that the "Tragedy of the Commons" is yet another method to keep people from even trying to better their world.

There are multiple meanings of "routine". From your description I see you want to add variety.
To spice things up, I usually get a coffee from the shops. When that gets boring, I go to a different shop or at a different time. There are dry erase dice that one can write actions on the different faces of.
For those looking to break a habit, I usually do it by adding something, nearly anything early in the day. No reason to get a coffee at the shop if I am holding a coffee from home.
