I'm thinking of reading a book on rationalism and critical thinking. Where do you usually go first for recommendations?

People are losing trust in mainstream media because of perceived biased coverage of the Gaza genocide. If that erosion of trust is real, why isn't it prompting wider public re-examination of historical cover-ups and contested narratives — Watergate, Iran–Contra, Iraq, even shifting beliefs about who “beat” the Nazis? If we don't question how past information was shaped, what’s the point of preserving evidence (e.g., Gaza genocide evidence recently removed from YouTube by Google)? Won’t this all be forgotten in a few years, the same way all those previous events are no longer discussed?

What’s stopping a sustained, constructive public inquiry into these parallels between past cover-ups and current information control? Where are good, constructive places to discuss these issues without falling into unproductive conspiracy spirals?

The boss walks in, there's someone on the phone for you:

  • Phone: "Hi, I'm the leader person behind that book/television/film franchise you complain about online and gee-whiz, you're right! We want you to run things from here on out."
  • You: "Do I get supreme retcon powers?"
  • Phone: "Of course! We'll even retroactively edit in your changes!"

Huh, that was easy. What are you changing?

I started playing diatomic harmonica, recently. I've been following some YouTube how-to videos, feels like a nice start. Now I'm looking for some easy blues harmonica sheet music ... I don't mind paying for something, although free is nice too ... but web searches are only displaying cheap online courses. Can anyone recommend a book or website?

I can read harmonica tab.

I’m fixing a Honda GX160 carburetor and noticed that the service manual doesn’t specify the gasket thickness anywhere.

Does anyone know what the correct gasket thickness is supposed to be for the GX160? And is gasket thickness actually important, or can I use any aftermarket set as long as it fits? I’m trying to understand whether the thickness affects anything.

Also, if anyone knows good sources for this kind of information, parts diagrams, technical bulletins, reliable aftermarket manuals, or even a trustworthy site where people have measured OEM gaskets—I’d appreciate any direction.

Thanks!

That one that helps you sleep, or that you could watch a thousand times?

Mine is the 1970s animated version of The Hobbit.

It's an absolute bugger to get out, often involving a finger to work it free?

I don't recall that ever happening with any other foodstuff.

Is there a real difference in water and electricity consumption? Personally, I don't use a lot of water to wash my dishes (by hand), but maybe I should install a flow meter to make sure.

What is your opinion on the subject? Do you have any evidence or studies available that could confirm your intuition? Or do you have other alternatives in mind?

Okay, at work I was surrounded by tons of people who were bigots. They would randomly say how they didn't want free college because then who would serve at restaurants, while they would say that they care about the environment. They would casually say that the confederate flag was not a big deal. They would casually comment on how they didn't have any black people in their schools when I sat down at the table. Whenever I sat down they would complain on how men salaries are higher than women, which I would have agreed on if it was not for the fact that the only people always discussing this was middle class white people, who only said this when I black man sat down, and statistically black people make the lowest salaries, so to me it felt like if someone from a buffet came to only complain to starving people that the next person at the buffet got more food than they did.

They made fun of my Mexican coworker who once got mistaken by the guy who was painting the stairs because he was Mexican. And many other microaggressions that are too numerous to tell.

But going to the point of my question: These people were pure asses, but they were brilliant at programming. They did so much better than me, and I was trying my best. It bothered me so much not just because their performance was better, but that they were bigots and their performance was better. It just felt like universal injustice. Made me wonder what was the point of trying if all your effort can just be surpassed by bigots.

I have to admit that I was pretty ignorant of corporate American culture, and had no idea what area I wanted to concentrate on. But somehow these people just knew all that shit. Like, I have no clue how they knew so much.

Which makes me wonder how do you deal with this feeling, and what gives you the motivation to keep trying, when even your best effort can be surpassed by people with terrible attitudes that you hate. Like, I know that I will never surpass people like that, and I don't think the point of life is being in an endless scoreboard, but it literally just feels like pure ass, and I want to hear others experiences. I also hate feeling behind all the time.

I grew up on Asterix comics in English. The main humour is around puns. The authors are French (or Belgian, not sure). So did they write puns in French and someone translated them and made sure the comic was still funny in English? Or did they write it in English?

Do you prefer to work alone or to work in a group? Be it in-office or remote. Guided works should not be included as it involves at least 2 people.
And also on an interesting note, how much AI has replaced your work buddy?

How can you actively prevent it from getting worse—like starting now/today?

Why do I have to use all possible different protection equipment (gloves, masks, ventilation and glasses) when printing in resin, but then people put uv resin directly in their fingers? And what about the ones that go in people's mouths? It has to be different right?!

Also didn't even asked about kids TOYS, it wouldn't be a thing if UV resin was so dangerous, right? RIGHT?

It feels like many Lemmy instances end up trying to be “Reddit replacements,” which results in dozens of very similar communities with overlapping topics. I wonder if it would make more sense for each instance to focus on a broad topic, like sports, literature, or technology, and then have communities for the subtopics within that.

What are your thoughts? Do you prefer many general instances, or would you rather see topic-focused instances?

I been meaning to watch more videos on PeerTube which despite that I did subscribe to several channel, thanks to Fedi.directory website and FediFollow account on Mastodon, there's only few the videos that I watched and has interests me. Otherwise, I mostly watched stuff on YouTube as sort video I watch (Videogames and discussion about pop music) has more of it on YouTube as well, it's biggest video-sharing platform. I still want to give PeerTube a chance as I still believe that we need an alternative to YouTube.

Here's few the channels I watched on PeerTube for anyone wondering:

  • Veronica Explains veronicaexplains@tinkerbetter.tube - Love watching Linux related stuff
  • VWestlife vwestlife@makertube.net - Talks mostly about retro tech which I find interesting.

my new job involves taking labor samples from point a to point b in a huge university campus involving several buildings using a cart. There are lots of downtime and many of my talkative future coworkers sip coffee and smoke several times a day, which I find boring, unhealthy and a waste of time. They're not interested in learning something new.

I'm studying to be a Physician Associate, so my job is not completely unrelated to my major. I plan to use my downtime to learn chemistry, anatomy, active ingredients...

Most of my learning materials are printed in A size papers, ANSI standard, which is perfect to be stacked, put in a portfolio with clipboard and study on the go during downtime.

Obvious solution would be to use a portfolio bag, but I wanted to ask you if you can think of something better.

I recently got called out for this, and rightfully so. In my case, I think it’s ADD. It’s embarrassing to admit, but many times, I start reading, a thought pops in my head, I impulsively post, then forget to read the rest of the article. Sometimes, I find myself reading a comment and voting or replying before I’ve read all of it.

My understanding is that a lot of us on Lemmy have ADD. Perhaps that’s why, for example, it’s not uncommon to see the most upvoted comment in a thread being one that completely ignores what the article actually says, or posts getting downvoted to hell when the article’s headline or initial paragraph appears to present a perspective the community disagrees with, but the overall message is actually more neutral or agreeable.

Have you noticed yourself unwittingly engaging in any of these behaviors, or am I just overlooking something due to a deficit of attention? Oh, wait, was there another post on this topic last week that I completely missed? Ha, I actually did remember to search first this time, so hopefully not. Ooh, look at that rock!
