Google has announced it is building a new way for 'experienced users' to install Android apps that haven't been verified.

Honestly, I'm baffled by the tablet market. Everyone puts out underpowered devices. Even Google! How can you, in good faith, justify a tablet having a slower processor and less memory than a phone while trying to advertise it as the superior device, perfect for editing and whatnot?

My phone is definitely showing it's age, about 5 years old now, battery doesn't last more than 7ish hours. I've done research and if possible, I think I'd like to get the Fairphone. Does anyone have experience with it in the US? I know I'd have to import it, but using local carriers how well does it work?

In August 2025, Google announced that starting next year, it will no longer be possible to develop apps for the Android platform without first registering centrally with Google. This registration will involve:

  • Paying a fee to Google

  • Agreeing to Googleโ€™s Terms and Conditions

  • Providing government identification

  • Uploading evidence of the developerโ€™s private signing key

  • Listing all current and future application identifiers

  • Here is the https://keepandroidopen.org/

Starting next year, Google plans to require all apps installed on certified Android devices, including sideloading, to come from developers it has verified. Many Android developers see the move as a power grab and have started a movement to "Keep Android Open."

The petition, organized by software developer Marc Prud'hommeaux, seeks to rally support to challenge Google's plan and to rouse regulators to the antitrust implications of allowing Google to oversee the verification of all Android developers working with Android Certified devices, but does not affect alternative Android or ASOP builds like /e/OS, LineageOS, or GrapheneOS.

New list entries - updated December 2025:

Other recent entries

Introduction

This is a list of all games, sorted by genre, that I've purchased, loved, and finished (or played extensively) over many years and I'd like to recommend as I found them excellent and without predatory monetization, gacha, or infinite microtransactions of any kind. I'm also including the most recommended premium titles by the communityโ€”which I haven't playtested yet or I'm not particularly interested inโ€”marked with ๐Ÿ’ฌ. Please check the entry criteria below before recommending a game.

Some of the games may be free with IAP's, but EXCLUSIVELY to unlock the full game, DLCs, or remove ads (no gacha or energy/gambling mechanics, "diamonds", pay-to-win, or any recurrent cash-grab bullshit of sort).

[Disclaimer: chances are some items in this list will inevitably be delisted from the Play Store as time goes by, or will not be compatible with future Android versions. I'll do my best to always keep it updated, but feel free to PM me if you come across any unavailable title and I'll fix the entry]

I'm planning to keep this list updated for personal reference with the new games I'll play and like, or old games I've played that will come to mind later. So feel free to save it and check out new entries every so often.

My ultimate goal is to promote worthy content and honest/talented devs, hoping to see more quality games in the future, rather than the cancerous cash-grab machines the Play Store is regrettably riddled with. And, of course, to let everyone have a great time playing great titles ;)

Entry criteria for user recommendations ๐Ÿ’ฌ

  1. paid Play Store games compatible with recent Android versions
  2. no ads or infinite microtransactions. Allowed: ads-removal, full-game unlock, or proper DLCs
  3. you love the game and think it's worth the price
  4. must include link and, possibly, genre

I will still use my discretion and judgment to filter the entries, in an effort to try and keep the list's quality high.

[If you want to play or recommend free games, without ads or microtransactions, here is the list for you.]

  • Blasphemous ๐Ÿ’ฌ ๐ŸŽฎ (platform hack-n-slash)

ย

Action RPG

  • Undead Horde 2: Necropolis ๐ŸŒŸ ๐ŸŽฎ

  • Trials of Mana ๐ŸŒŸ ๐ŸŽฎ (added controller support and achievements!)

  • The Bard's Tale (3D action RPG adventure - this game has some optional IAPs: they can easily be ignored but they're there. Also, some users experienced an auto-save bug that corrupts ALL save files, so I recommend disabling auto-save altogether. I'm keeping the game listed here for now as I still consider it a true premium game and I haven't personally experienced any bug)

  • Evoland ๐ŸŽฎ (action/adventure RPG with 2D and 3D graphics and a mix of genres. Touch controls work great)

  • Evoland 2 ๐ŸŒŸ ๐ŸŽฎ (action/adventure RPG with 2D and 3D graphics, mix of genres; controller recommended)

  • Anodyne ๐ŸŒŸ ๐ŸŽฎโ—๏ธ ๐Ÿ“ฑ (lanscape/portrait. Adding controller support through Panda is a must if you want to complete the game without losing your mind)

  • Legend of the Skyfish 2 ๐ŸŽฎ (Zelda-like with a fishing rod for weapon)

  • Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion ๐ŸŽฎ (humorous, Zelda-like, pixel art adventure; Play achievements didn't work correctly, but they might have been fixed later on)

Extras and emulators/engines

  • AppSales is an app that will make you save some money by notifying you when specific games (or apps) in the Play Store go on sale. Just add the games you wish to buy to the AppSales' watchlist and you'll get notified when the price gets cut.

  • Panda Gamepad Pro ๐ŸŽฎ is a tool that allows you to map your controller for touch inputs, practically adding controller support to those game that don't have it.

  • Gamedeck ๐ŸŽฎ (game launcher/front-end for controllers)

  • Beacon Game Launcher ๐ŸŽฎ (game launcher/front-end for controllers. Also optimized for emulators)

  • Retroarch ๐ŸŽฎ (emulator for almost all consoles) "jack of all trades" emulator, the only one that supports analog triggers for Xbox One S controller. It has a bit of a learning curve, and other individual emulators might offer better performance

  • Dolphin ๐ŸŽฎ best emulator for GameCube and Wii

  • DraStic DS Emulator ๐ŸŽฎ

  • PPSSPP Gold - PSP Emulator ๐ŸŽฎ

  • Delta Touch [9 x Doom engines] ๐Ÿ’ฌ (engine for Doom games)

  • Quad Touch ๐Ÿ’ฌ (engine for Quake games)

Delisted or outdated

Happy gaming ;)

ps: please let me know if there's any wrong information about the games included in this list (especially regarding IAPs or availability) so that I'll fix the post if necessary.

Thanks to Googleโ€™s decision to get ahead of the curve and drop new devices in August, weโ€™re almost 100 days into the life of the Pixel 9. The big drop of Android 15 means the final piece of the puzzle has been added, but does that make the entry-level model a better buy?

Per the GitHub readme:

This app is discontinued. The last release on Github and F-Droid will happen with the December 2024 Syncthing version. Interactions (issues, PRs) are limited now, and the entire repo will be archived after the last release. Thus all contributions are preserved for any future (re)use. The forum is still open for discussions and questions. I would kindly ask you to refrain from trying to challenge the decision or asking "why-type" questions - I wont engage with them.

The reason is a combination of Google making Play publishing something between hard and impossible and no active maintenance. The app saw no significant development for a long time and without Play releases I do no longer see enough benefit and/or have enough motivation to keep up the ongoing maintenance an app requires even without doing much, if any, changes.

Thanks a lot to everyone who ever contributed to this app!

This is extremely disappointing news. I have been using the Syncthing-Fork version, but since it is based on this app, this may be the end for that app as well.

TL;DR

  • The European Council has ended its adoption procedure for rules related to phones with replaceable batteries.
  • By 2027, all phones released in the EU must have a battery the user can easily replace with no tools or expertise.
  • The regulation intends to introduce a circular economy for batteries.
