World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
- Blogsites are treated in the same manner as social media sites. Medium, Blogger, Substack, etc. are not valid news links regardless of who is posting them. Yes, legitimate news sites use Blogging platforms, they also use Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube and we don't allow those links either.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

They don’t need to push Russia out so long as Russia is losing far more men and equipment. This is a war of attrition and despite being far larger Russia is losing.
Fighting age men and equipment are finite resources.
They might gain ground now but Russia will be unable to hold it, assuming that the EU and US continue to back Ukraine.
OK, you are speaking like the Ukraine has infinite resources and tactically loosing ground just to deplete Russia. I'm sure that they have the plan to loose strategically important cities just for that.
US continue to back Ukraine? Please, do a reality check. While EU is only backing Ukraine halfheartedly and not even the entire EU.
You let the mask slip for a second there Sergei.
This is dumb. It's dependant on the mother tongue how and if a definitive article is being used with Ukraine. In German for example, you say "die Ukraine", and a natural translation into colloquial English results in the use of "the Ukraine". This doesn't mean to be a Sergei.
To a Ukrainian worried about the nation-state’s territorial integrity, that little word “the” might suggest that the speaker does not much care whether Ukraine is an independent state. Like it or not, and intentionally or not, the language a person uses reflects their political positions, including their position on Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty.
"The" before a place name is an odd choice, isn't it? There are really very few places (in English) that have it. "The Hague" being probably the best known. There's one locally here called "The Dalles".
Odd that it's so common in Spanish but not English.
The Gambia is another one.
I don't know, I see Ukraine vs the Ukraine in a similar light as Democrat Party vs Democratic Party. Yes, it's possible that it's an innocent mistake, but looking at everything else the person is saying, it's usually pretty clear when they have an ulterior motive.
The Shire being the most famous
If we were speaking German and he wasn't spouting Russian propaganda I might feel bad about it. But we aren't and he is.
And repeatedly insulting me for it isn't helping your case. So kindly, go fuck yourself.
Oh my, so you first accuse someone of spouting propaganda and insult them at the same time, because you don't like their perspective, all based off of the grammatically wrong use of an article and when you're being confronted with your shitty behaviour you play victim, because said behaviour is ousted as being the opposite of civil and the kind of people acting like that, which includes you, are being called out as the clever individuals that they are.
Bohooo, poor little ignorant victim you are.
How about you accept, that you behaved like an asshole and throw out an excuse - that would be more impressive. But looks like you don't have the character strength.
An alternative would be to actually provide some kind of arguments as to why the accused's arguments or opinions are wrong, instead of straight up denouncing them - that would also be more impressive. But looks like you don't have the intellectual strength.
Get lost, splendid individual.
(edited out some mean words, because of this funny line that is drawn for the very selectively applied civility rule)
What a very civil answer of you. Totally not the behaviour of a ridiculously propagandised teenager, that might have had a few too many low quality vodkas themselves in their short and miserable live.
tbh this entire comment thread is trying to frame any discussion as being pro Russian. At least the pointless grammar bike shedding lets us know whom to block
Wikipedia on the Name of Ukriane
We don't necessarily disagree, but proclaiming disregard for Ukrainian souvereignty based on the use of a definitive article in an international forum is bad faith conduct. It's specifically an English thing and a Ukrainian/Russian thing. There are languages that are using the definitve article based on how their languages work and these kind of usages will sometimes transfer into English.
This, again, does not mean what you trying to do, discrediting another user's opinions or arguments based on an improper use of a foreign language. That is the opposite of civil behaviour.
As a german, I had to actively learn to not use "the" in combination with "Ukraine". It happened because of a confrontation with clever individuals like you, but that really can be done politely hinting at the proper use in the English language and not by shaming the other person.
(reup, edited out the meany words, lol, because imagine the uncivility that might be caused in this post)
