This community - !Virology@lemmy.sdf.org - is exactly what it sounds like, a place for discussing & learning all about biological viruses. Computer viruses and prions are off topic.

Expected types of content will include scientific papers, as well as articles in the lay press, videos, etc.

The rules are designed to encourage posting of content that will appeal to readers with a strong AP (accelerated high school) or undergrad interest in biological sciences. Posting of extremely involved topics which require either a PhD or deep knowledge of a highly specific sub-field to enjoy is discouraged.

This community - !ChemistryVideos@lemmy.sdf.org - is exactly what it sounds like, a place for posting general interest videos about chemistry and closely related topics.

The rules are designed to encourage posting of videos that would be interesting to a layperson with an AP (high school) or undergrad understanding of physical sciences and a strong interest in chemistry. In other words, amateur chemistry videos are strongly encouraged, while videos about very narrow topics which require a PhD to understand are not encouraged.

YouTube has a great chemistry scene. It'd be great to have something similar on PeerTube someday, but we'll start with what's available. Amateur and professional content is on topic.

Linux gets a lot of love there on Fedi, so I think it would be cool if BSD would get some of it too.

For those unaware it's a Unix-like operation system, one of they key differences from Linux is a more permissive license, so PlayStation 4 or MacOS are originally based on it.

There's a list of existing communities:

Apparently, there's also a Lemmy instance dedicated to BSD — https://blendit.bsd.cafe/

Note: No .ml communities, as my instance is defederated from them.

I always liked the idea of Inktober but I don't like how restrictive it is! Drawtober is a much less restrictive October art challenge in that you can use your own prompts and mediums!

!space_games@piefed.world

Games with a space setting, space-focused gameplay or space motifs. Space sims (Elite, Freelancer, X4), space strategy (Stellaris, Star Ruler 2, Moons of Ardan) or even adventure games with a space setting and themes (Citizen Sleeper, Gemini Rue).

Any games about the great beyond.

I also curate/moderate some other gaming communities, so expect a similar level of engagement.

practical healthspan community introductory pinned post

Welcome to Practical Healthspan

Live long and prosper.

Hey — I’m glad you’re here. Practical Healthspan is a space to talk about health in the everyday: better sleep, food that works for you, moving a bit (or a lot), managing stress, staying connected, and trying small experiments. No hype. No pressure. Just what works, backed by science when possible, and real stories when not.

What to expect

  • Friendly, curious vibes. We ask questions, share what we try, and learn together.
  • When we talk about studies or protocols, we label what kind of evidence it is. If it’s your experiment, we say so.
  • Be respectful. Critique ideas, not people. No “one-right way” energy.
  • We’re not medical advice. If something’s serious, talk to actual professionals.

If you’re new to the Fediverse / Lemmy please check out some of the links in the community description

Weekly threads you’ll see

  • Motivation Monday – What are you focusing on this week, health-wise?
  • Study Sunday – We dig into a research paper, pull out takeaways, and a small practical nudge.
  • Habit Check-In – Mid-week or end-of-week: what habits worked, what didn’t, what you’ll tweak.
  • Food-Prep Friday – Share recipes, meal ideas, what’s helping you eat better without stressing.
  • Tools & Gadgets – If you tried a new sleep tracker, app, kitchen gear, etc., share what worked or was meh.
  • Reflection Friday – What experiments or changes you tried this week, what surprised you, what next.

Quick rules (so we all feel good here)

  1. Be kind. Ideas over insults. No shaming someone’s body, food, choices.
  2. If you’re making claims, try to provide sources. If it’s from personal experience, label it.
  3. No medical advice. If you are discussing medication, serious health conditions, etc., recommend professional help.
  4. Disclose conflicts / affiliations (if you’re selling something, promoting something, etc.).
  5. No spam. Keep the vibes helpful.

In addressing the current climate crisis, it's important to understand and share the latest science on the issue and its causes, or at least what action steps are needed. Published reports from respected organisations like the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are influenced by political interests and vastly understate the contributions of deforestation and the animal exploitation industry. The "father of global warming" points out that people are not well-informed.

!climate_lm@slrpnk.net openly acknowledges the cow in the room and does not suppress crucial information that conflicts with the official narrative. Discussion of all aspects of the climate crisis (and especially potential solutions) is encouraged.

Obvious spam, uncivil posts, and misinformation are not immune to intervention, but on-topic civil posts are certain to not be subject to censorship.

If you are familiar with r/DrugNerds on reddit, this is intended to be a very similar community, albeit hopefully with a wider focus.

r/DrugNerds tends to be heavily oriented toward discussion of psychoactives and nootropics, whereas I would like !DrugNerds@lemmy.sdf.org to serve people with interests in all subfields of pharmacology.

My hope is that in coming to DrugNerds you will be just as likely to find an article about Rational Drug Design, or a paper about the discovery of a new antibiotic, or a link to an especially pithy Derek Lowe post, as you will be to see a post about a recreational drug or nootropic.

I have created a new community for sharing aesthetically pleasing screengrabs from movies, tv and video games.

Wasn’t too sure about the name. Other possibilities would have been: screenshots, screencaps, moviestills, mediastill, filmstills but the latter ones are too restricting so i picked screengrab as it’s also fun to say. :)

!urbanism@lemmy.world

This is a space to explore and share ideas about how we shape the towns and cities we live in. Here we'll be making a place where we can openly discuss urban planning for not only large cities but also our small towns - including but not limited to transit, green spaces, walkability, traffic, and anything related to living in an urban environment.

Many of you already know me, I'm Scrubbles, passionate about Urbanism and excited to see what we can do with this community.

I welcome all posts about Urbanism - videos about it, articles, open questions, whatever you may like!

Minor housekeeping, rules will come as they are needed, my big two are "Don't be a dick" - meaning discussion is welcome and arguments are fine, but I don't tolerate personal attacks, and keep posts on target. Obviously these will evolve with the community.

Hopefully this will be my only "announcement" style post, but felt like we should kick it off somewhere. Welcome!
